Bobbin lace

An ancient art, still present in Scannese culture

The technique of bobbin lace making appears to have been present in Scanno since the mid-15th century. At that time workers arrived from northern Italy with their families to help rebuild the town following a major earthquake. Their wives taught the women of Scanno lace-making. It is assumed that this craft form spread because women in the winter months, not being engaged in the countryside, devoted themselves to this craft. This led them to perfect their technique and to have orders for trousseaus so much so that they made a business out of it.

Scanno lace has rather peculiar characteristics. Made from a very thin cotton thread, the pairs of bobbins (a special type of spool to which it winds the yarn) vary from three to twelve. It is often made without any pattern. Bobbin lace can be worked in non-continuous thread, the thread is broken once one part of the work is finished, and then the bobbins are reattached continuing another pattern part of the same creation.

Bobbin lace is part and parcel of the home furnishings of Scanno families. Mainly, however, we find it on the trousseau of Scanno brides, who since childhood have been able to enjoy the art of lace-making from their grandmothers and mothers.

Even today, especially during the summer you can see lace makers, sitting on the steps of houses and near the typical alleys of the village, intent and absorbed in lace-making.
