Bows and Cimosas

Once you arrive in the historic center of Scanno, the advice is to walk through the narrow streets and let yourself be enchanted by the wrought-iron balconies, Baroque portals, numerous arches and characteristic cimmose. In fact, the village is characterized by an endless game of chasing each other among these peculiar architectural elements.

Between one enchantment and another dwell on two things in particular: arches, old access doors incorporated by houses as a result of urban expansion or elements of building against earthquakes used to connect various constructions together and to give greater stability to buildings. In the village, if you are a little bit careful, you can spot many of them. Even now they are used as outdoor but covered spaces for a lot of domestic work by Scannese families. One in particular is the arch near the church of St. Eustace, which is the oldest gateway to the village in its first core.

The cimmose, on the other hand, are the stone staircases, outside the dwellings, that give access to the second floor. Their functions were twofold. For one thing, the classic Scannese dwelling always included stables and cellars on the ground floor, while the upper floors contained living quarters. It was therefore unnecessary and impractical to have access to the living quarters via the stables and cellars. In addition, small rooms used for sheltering farm animals, mainly chickens and hens, were made below the cimmoses.

Arches and cimmoses are architectural elements of great symbolic significance, which today keep visitors to the village of Scanno with their eyes up!
